Music Video - First Edit



I have edited about 35 seconds or so of my music video, which can be seen above. At this point I have footage at 0:29-0:56,1:07, 1:09 and 2:10-2:18  I'm not happy with certain parts of it as a result of bad footage or due to a shot not looking right. However it was good to get the footage together and experiment on the software to get an insight into what the final product will look like. I haven't added all of the editing effects that I am planning to use but this is due to the limited time I had to edit in the end. At this stage the edit is mainly about getting the clips in the right position and seeing whether such positioning works. Obviously it is unfinished and I have a lot to do but I am now feeling a lot more confident about the final product.

Problems With Editing

During mock week we were allocated a 2hr editing slot so that we could finish our first edit before the Christmas break however when I turned up for mine the MAC which I had previously been using was displaying a problem and so I was unable to use it in this way. Ordinarily I would have changed MACs however the footage I had already edited was saved specifically to that MAC and so I would have had to start completely again. I Instead got the IT technician to come and sort out the problem however this took longer than first expected and so it was an hour before I actually began editing. This consequently only gave me an hour to edit so I was unable to edit as much as I had planned to and only got around 35 seconds done.

Filming Diary (12/12/2014)

DAY TWO
12/12/2014
Street/Jacks house

Today I filmed all of the shots set in the street setting and although there was the odd problem it went quite well. This means that we should have some good footage to use in my video, at least for the first draft anyway. If after reviewing the footage I find minor faults then I may have to go back after the Christmas break and film some of the shots again.

The first problem that we had was that the bus to our shooting location was late and so we did not get there for the time we had hoped, meaning we unfortunately had limited time to film and so were unable to shoot the shots inside Jacks house which I had planned to film previously. I did however get all of the street scene done and so we will not have to film in the cold again. 
I filmed the shots in order because I thought that if I were unable to film it all it would be better to have a sequence of shots to edit together. I instructed both Kate and Jack of there character profiles and told them what I wanted from them for each shot. This allowed me to get the look I envisioned. I didn't experience many problems with the acting however some of the more serious shots were hard to achieve and took a few goes because my cast often broke out into laughter. Due to the lack of time a few of these shots may not have the most professional acting in but that was expected from the start. One problem I did find was that due to the weather my cast (wearing the costumes I had planned) got quite cold and so we frequently had to go inside to warm up as they were unable to concentrate. This may have prolonged the shoot. The wind also often resulted in the casts (mainly Kates) hair being blown around a bit but this just added to the look, making it appear authentic. The only other issue I experienced was trying to make sure the tripod was on equal ground as the pavement was quite bumpy in places.
All of these issues were fairly easy to overcome and didn't disturb filming too much so hopefully when I review the footage properly on a computer I will have some good footage.

    Today (10th December) I sent a message to both Kate and Jack asking them whether they were still okay to do filming on Friday, which they confirmed was okay. I then just informed them of my plans so far and will keep them updated using this chat.

Travel Arrangements

As me and Kate have to travel from college to our filming location and then back to college again I have checked the bus times to make sure we can get there and back in time, with enough time to film in between.






I used the stage coach bus website to research the timetable for the 110 bus which I know goes down Bricknell avenue (where my college is) and goes into Cottingham. Looking at the timetable I was unsure of where we would be getting the bus from and so I used Google maps to locate St Mary's Ave which I found was only a bit further up from my college. We are therefore going to catch the bus from near Hotham road which is just before St Mary's ave. We are going to try and get the 11:25 bus (approximately- I will check the official bus stop schedule when I next pass it) so we get to St Margarets Ave (Cottingham) for about 11:44. This will only be possible however if I ask my teacher if I can leave class 10 minutes early, if this isn't possible we will have to catch a later bus.


We then have to walk from the bus stop to our location so I used Google maps to work out an approximate time for how long this will take us. It came up with 13 minutes so hopefully we should get to our location to start filming by 12:00.

As Kate and I both have a lesson which starts at 14:50 we need to be back to college in time so I have also had to consider the bus we're getting back. Unfortunately the bus times back from Cottingham are every hour from 13:50 onwards and so if we plan to get the bus back we will have to get the 13:52 bus from St Margarets Ave which will arrive back near college at about 14:10. This means that we will only have about 1 hour and 40 minutes to film. Hopefully this will be enough time but if it's not and we need longer to film we will instead get a taxi back to college.

Test Shots



These are some test shots I did before filming the main body of my music video. I did a series of pans, tilts and zooms some of which using a subject. This helped me to familiarise myself with the equipment so that when it came to filming shots for my actual video I would be able to do this easily and quickly.




I also did a practice lip sync using some of the lyrics which Kate will actually be lip syncing in my video. This was just to make sure Kate could remember the words and sing them in time to the song but also so I could practice editing it in time to the music.

Whilst I was doing my first filming session I got my friend Jodie to take a couple of behind the scenes pictures to show the set up and working space.

I've decided to keep both a written and video diary of the filming process, recording any problems which occur at the time. This will be updated as I go along.

DAY ONE

03/12/2014
Green room

Today I filmed some of the shots set in the green room and overall it went quite well, however there were a few problems which may have effected the quality of some of the shots. This means (depending on the footage) we may have to go back and re film certain shots. 


I asked my friend Jodie to come to the green room with us because she is a film student and so is familiar with the equipment, having used it before. She quickly went through basic things such as setting up the tripod and framing the shot correctly before we started actual filming. This really helped me to conserve time as without her guidance I would probably have wasted a lot of time figuring things out. 


I started off by filming the lip sync shots because I thought these would be quite simple to do. I got Kate to stand against a black curtain and set the camera up in line with her. I then tried to adjust the lighting in the room because it was affecting the shot however this proved difficult. The lighting equipment tended to cause Kate's face to appear really bright on the camera and even after numerous adjustments it was still causing problems in the shot. Due to the lack of time I adjusted it to the best of my ability and began filming. However when viewing the shots on the camera the image didn't seem to be affected greatly, therefore the shots may be usable. When I have the opportunity I will review the footage on a computer and see whether I am happy with the quality, if not I will schedule to re shoot the shots. 

Also causing a minor problem was the fact Kate was quite quiet when lip syncing which could possibly make editing difficult, particularly pairing the lyrics with her mouth movement.

Once the lip sync shots were complete I went on to film the other shots. I started with the pan/movement around the girls head however this also was quite problematic due to lack of suitable equipment. For this shot to work well I would have needed a camera dolly or something similar but this isn't available at college, therefore I had to improvise. I tried 3 different methods to see which worked the best. To start with I tried attaching the camera to the tripod and keeping it still whilst Kate turned, however the effect created was not how I had imagined and I didn't really like the look of the shot. I then decided to try doing a hand held shot with the original intended movement which worked quite well however the shot was slightly shaky (which is to be expected). This decreased the quality of the shot and so I tried a third method. Finally I tried attaching the camera to a dolly track and holding it at head level whilst moving around Kates head, which worked surprisingly well but often resulted in things from the background appearing in the shot. Overall I found this shot very difficult to film and although I haven't been able to view the footage properly yet, I think it might need to be shot again. However I do believe that now I have experimented with different methods I have an idea of the best way to film the shot and it is just a case of getting the right technique. Therefore I will schedule to film in the green room again in the near future and if I am still unable to capture the shot I will change it to something else. Despite these problems the rest of the filming went fairly well and I am excited to review the footage and begin to edit it. 


With the limited time we had allocated (1 hour) we were unable to do test shots in preparation for our next filming session so in my next media lesson I plan to borrow a camera and do some practice shots with a class mate. I will practice panning, tilting and zooming in particular and if I have time I may also do a practice lip sync.

This morning (3rd December) before our filming session I text my actress Kate asking her to bring a plain black or grey jumper as part of her costume. Everything else was provided for her and so was my responsibility to bring other costume and make up items. This helped the filming session to run smoothly as we had all of the required items for the shots being filmed.

Weather Planning


One of my scenes is set in the street which means filming has to be done on a day suiting the weather. To make sure I organised a suitable day for this shoot I checked the weather forecast for the upcoming week. I looked at Tuesday initially because it was less cold than any other day meaning the cast will be warmer and more comfortable in their costumes. However I then realised that it is supposed to be very windy which could interact with the sound. This is not much of an issue because the sound will be taken off anyway, however it could possibly blow the characters hair and costume around which would be distracting and might not give the desired effect. 

I was then going to look at the forecast for Thursday because it appears to be considerably less windy however Kate is unable to make this day because of work. Jack is also unable to make Wednesday night so I instead looked at the forecast for Friday, however with this being quite far ahead the information was limited:


There's not a lot of information at the moment (30th November) but from what I can see the weather appears to be not too bad. I don't think it's supposed to rain, the wind isn't as bad as earlier in the week and although it's colder this doesn't effect the actual filming too much.This means that filming on this day might be possible, I will however check the weather again in a couple of days time and post an updated, more detailed forecast. If I then believe the weather is still good enough to continue with filming then I will try to organise the shoot with my cast.

UPDATE
After consulting with my actors I found that Kate is going away this weekend (5th-7th) and so would be unable to make filming on Friday (5th), therefore we are going to instead try to also film the street scene on the 12th if we have time. I have looked on BBC Weather at Cottingham (the location for filming on this date) however the forecast is currently unavailable (30th November) so I will check again at a later date. When it is available I will decide whether I think it is suitable to do this or not.

SECOND UPDATE

Today (9th December) I checked BBC Weather again for the forecast in Cottingham on Friday and there is now an overview of the weather (although it is quite minimal). There isn't a lot of information but from what I can see the weather appears to be alright. Although it is cloudy it is not supposed to rain during the time I am filming and so we should be able to shoot the street scenes. There's a possibility that it could be quite windy however which will affect the sound quality but this will be taken off anyway and so shouldn't be a problem. Although there could still be a problem with the characters hair and costumes being blown around slightly. After looking at the weather I have decided to go ahead with filming on Friday and hope that no problems arise. If we are unlucky and are unable to film certain shots then we will focus our filming on the inside shots instead and rearrange filming the street scenes for another time.

December Shooting Schedule

Organising when I'm going to shoot each scene is important so I know each actor/actress can make that day and time. Due to each of us (me and cast members) having different timetables for college and work shifts we've had to organise when we're filming very carefully. Also Jack (the main male character) lives quite far away in comparison to me and Kate (the main female character), therefore we've had to ensure that he has enough time to get to the location (one of the reasons we've chosen his house as the setting for many of the shots). To keep everyone up to date I have gotten both cast members numbers so I can communicate with them easily. I have posted screen shots of the messages I have already sent them regarding shooting dates and times below (these will be updated as we arrange more dates). In addition to this I have also taken a screenshot of my online calendar in which I have added dates of when and where I am filming so that I can manage my time efficiently, making sure I and other cast members are where they are supposed to be and also making sure I have the right props, costume, etc needed at the time. 


We have already organised a few of the shooting dates for the up coming month. 

2nd December:

Me and Kate both share a free on a Tuesday last period (14:50-16:00) and so are going to arrange to book the green room out at college for this time on the 2nd. Here we are going to film the shots which use a black background and artificial lighting (for example shots 27a, 27b, 27c and 28). I have also asked Jack if he could come into college to film shots which need him as well, however he is unsure of whether he is going to be able to make this due to study commitments, therefore we may have to rearrange for Jack to come in another time. I will however go ahead with filming the shots of Kate on her own so I have some footage to use and edit until Jack is free. This will allow me to see whether I think the shots are to a good enough standard and if they aren't I'll have time to re-shoot them at a later date. I am also going to use this time to do some test shots so I can practice with the camera, for example doing practice pans and tilts. This will prepare me for later in the month (the 12th) when these camera movements will be needed. 

UPDATE
Today (1st December) I went to the media department to try and book the green room out for the time we had organised but unfortunately someone had already booked it at that time. This meant that I had to quickly reorganise with my actress (Kate) to book it out for the following day (Wednesday 3rd December) in our free period from 10:30- 11:30. This unfortunately means that Jack is unable to make it as he is at college and so I will arrange for him to come in another day to film the shots which require him.

12th December:

We have also arranged to film on Friday the 12th because this is convenient for everyone and it is essential that all cast members are available for this session. We haven't organised a specific time as of yet but have decided it will be between 12 and 14:30. This is because Jack has the day off of college and so is available from anytime and me and Kate are free from 11:30 to 14:50 but have allowed time for travelling to and from the shooting location. In addition to this the time will allow us to use natural lighting because this is before the sun sets. MES: Outfit - Look 2 (Jack)


This is Jacks second outfit which will probably be used for the performance sections to give variety and to separate from the narrative sections. Similarly to the last look this is also very casual, consisting of dark jeans, a plain jumper and some rough, slightly worn down boots. I created this outfit because its a bit more sophisticated and fashionable in comparison to the last one, therefore it is more suited to the performance elements. The look is still quite casual as I didn't want to go over the top. Creating this outfit may be quite difficult however as I am unsure of whether Jack has any jumpers similar to this, if not I will look at the clothes he owns and decide on what I think will look best.

MES: Outfit - Look 1 (Jack)


This look is Jacks first outfit and will be used for the narrative sections, the jacket and scarf being removed after shot 44. The look is simple and quite casual which will help to create verisimilitude. It consists of dark jeans, a plain black t-shirt, black converse shoes, a wax Barbour jacket and a plain, grey scarf. I chose this particular outfit because its typical of what a man might wear in everyday life. It also doesn't look like a lot of thought has been put into it reflecting the character Jack is playing. In addition to this I know that Jack owns a Barbour jacket, converse and several plain, black T-shirts, therefore creating the outfit will be quite easy to do.

MES: Hair and Make-up - Look 1 (Kate)


This is the hair and make-up look I intend to use for the narrative sections of my video. I wanted to test the look before filming so I could see whether I liked it or not. However with Kates busy schedule it was hard to find the time to practice on her and so I instead created the look on myself. This allowed me to see whether I thought the look suited the character and also my actress (which I think it will).
The look is fairly simple and quite messy which is how I wanted the character to appear. I want Kate to look like she's not very concerned with her appearance. The make-up style I have used is very simple using a simple base and quite thick, cat-eye eyeliner. I chose this make-up style as it is easy to create and will suit Kate quite well. The simple base will help her to look fairly pale, which ties well with abusive narrative. The eyeliner will help to make Kates eyes stand out and also develop her grunge style. The hair style I choose to use is again quite simple. Its in a mainly straight style however the use of salt spray has helped to make it look quite messy and volumised. I decided on this hairstyle because like the make-up it is also easy to create and although Kate's hair is slightly different to my own it is an adjustable style. It is also very casual and so helps to create verisimilitude.

MES: Outfit - Look 2 (Kate)


This is Kate's second outfit and will be used for some of the abstract/performance elements. Certain elements of the costume may not actually end up being seen in shot however I have included them to give an insight into the entire costume. The look is less casual than the first and looks more 'dressy' and sophisticated, tying well with the performance sections. It is made up of a tight, leather skirt, a striped t-shirt, doc martin boots, grunge style jewellery and dark, painted nails. I choose this outfit because it differentiates from the narrative sections and is easy to create as I own several of the clothing items myself. The outfit also still reflects the characters grunge style.

MES: Outfit - Look 1 (Kate)


This is Kates first outfit and will be used for the narrative sections of the video. The jacket and hat will be removed after shot 44, where the shots are mainly based in Jacks house. The look is casual and is meant to portray an everyday outfit. It is made up of ripped black jeans, a plain grey t-shirt, a black leather jacket, heeled chunky chelsea boots, a woolly hat, a loose grunge style necklace and chipped dark nail varnish. I choose this outfit because its typical of what someone might wear on a casual day. It is very simplistic (reflecting the characters style) and will be easy to create. The chipped nail varnish and jewellery also help to make the outfit look slightly grunge, again portraying the characters style.

Mise-en-scene Ideas


HAIR
Overall I wanted to create quite a natural hair look for my female actress but with a messy and grunge style.This is because I think it reflects who I want the character to be. I liked the idea of having her hair mainly down and quite wavy as it suggests that not a lot of effort has been put into her appearance as she has other things on her mind (linking with the narrative). I also think having her hair down would tie well with the song itself which is also quite loose. I could possibly use different hairstyles for the different elements of the video, for example her hair could be down for the narrative sections and up for the performance sections (possibly in a quirky style).



Make up
Similarly to the hair styles I also wanted to create a fairly natural make up look for my female actress, however I also looked at some statement looks which could be used for the performance elements. I think using a natural make up style suits the characters profile and I liked the idea of having a bare lip but more made up eyes with a bit of eye shadow or possibly eyeliner and mascara. I think this prevents the look from being over the top and fake. I did however still look at some more dramatic styles and liked the idea of using a dark but bold lipstick on the performance shots (particularly the lip sync sections). This puts the focus on the girls lips and separates the narrative sections from the performance sections. One of the images above is a cut and sore lip which I included because of the link to the abusive narrative however creating this look realistically may be difficult. 


Costume
For the costume I wanted to create a casual, slightly alternative style for my female actress which I perceive to match her characters personality. I wanted to use the same outfit for the narrative sections because they are continuous and therefore this create continuity but then maybe have at least one other outfit for the performance elements. I liked the idea of having the girl wear ripped jeans, a plain t-shirt, boots and some form of casual jacket for the narrative as it comes across as an everyday outfit. This helps to create verisimilitude. I did also like the idea of having my female actress more dressed up in the performance sections to distinguish between the shots and also to juxtapose the difference in character.

Location List

I took some pictures of the locations I will be using for filming to give an idea of what the finished product will look like. The locations I am using are the green room, a street (Sancton Close) and Jacks house. The main reason for me choosing these locations is because they're easy to access and have the desired look I want.
I picked to use the green room because it is easily accessible and has the required equipment to produce a professional looking product. The room has good, high quality lighting and background props such as a black curtain (this is something which I require). In addition to this the green room has a booking sheet which makes accessing the room easy. 
The street I have chosen to use is Sancton Close and is where my other setting (Jacks house) is located. This makes filming a lot easier because we can film both the shots in the street and the shots in Jacks house on the same day. The only slight problem is getting from college or home to this location however with buses and taxi's we should be fine. Obviously this also makes it a lot easier for Jack, who has a busy schedule. The street generally doesn't have many cars around either which will make filming shots from across the road, etc easier as there won't be constant interruptions. The general set up of the street is also quite mundane and casual helping to create verisimilitude. 
I choose to use Jacks house as my final location as the style of the house is fairly modern and in my opinion fits the characters personalities, making it more realistic. The way the house is laid out (room wise) also fits quite well with how I visioned the setting. The layout also accompanies some of the shots quite well, for example the positioning of the stairs will help with shooting the scene were both characters are running up the stairs. With Jacks parents being out quite a lot, the house is often free meaning there are a lot of opportunities for filming, which we possibly wouldn't have at another location.

I asked my friend Kate to play the main female character in my music video because she is known to be a good actress and has had previous experience in front of the camera (with both still and moving image). I've known her for a long time so I know I can trust her to turn up to filming and take the project seriously. In addition to this she is also a media student and so knows what is expected of her and the product. Her style is very similar to the one I wish to achieve in my video (particularly her clothing) meaning costume and make up will be easy to create.

I asked Jack to play the main male character in my music video cause I know that he is reliable and won't let me down. He has been part of other peoples media projects in the past and so I know that he will be professional. I also believe that he will be able to adapt to the part convincingly. In addition to this Jacks general style and look fits the character well. Jack is also very confident and therefore won't be awkward in front of the camera.

Animatic



This is my storyboard animatic, which I have created so that I can roughly see what my final music video will look like. It also enables me to see whether I think the video will flow and if the shots fit in time with the music. This allows me to make any alterations to my storyboard before I begin filming. After viewing my animatic several times I believe that the shots work well together and hopefully will look just as effective in the real video.

Editing Tutorial Videos

As I have never used Final Cut Pro X before (the software I will be using to edit my music video) I decided to look at a few videos so that I could understand how to use it. This is so when I do begin editing I actually have an idea of how to do it and don't waste time playing around with it. Hopefully this further research will help me to produce a video that looks professional.

The first video I watched is above. It is a tutorial for beginners which runs through how to do basic things such as import clips, drag clips onto the timeline, cut clips down, add/remove sound, add effects and share the final product. I found this video very helpful as it provided the basic stuff that I needed to know to be able to use the software at a reasonable level. I now know how to do things which I may have struggled with before and so feel I am more equipped to actually start the editing process. 


Although the last clip was very helpful in allowing me to understand how to actually edit using the software it was not specifically based on editing a music video together and so to gain further knowledge I looked at the above video which focuses on editing a music video. This video showed me how to edit the clip in time to the music (helpful for lip sync) and also showed me how to put cuts in etc. This video was also very helpful as it showed me specific things which I am likely to do when editing my music video such as matching the clip to the music. After watching both of these clips (and a couple more which I haven't posted) I believe I am ready to begin the editing process and feel as though I can produce a high standard product.

Places My Video Will Feature

With the main audience for my product being fairly young, my video is likely to feature in a number of easily accessible places, in particular popular social networking sites such as YouTube, Facebook and Twitter. Using such social media will hopefully allow for wide exposure, so it can reach its intended audience. 


YouTube is the main site I will feature my video on. This is because of its accepted status as the biggest and most popular video sharing site. It's mass audience would mean my video would be viewed by a range of people, allowing it to not only reach my intended audience but also people who may not have seen the video otherwise. The site allows users to upload, view, share and comment easily, meaning people can spread their thoughts on the product within seconds. The 'share' ability allows the site to converge with other sites such as Facebook and Twitter allowing fans of the product to share it with friends and family. 



The ability to comment on YouTube is a great way of promotion which can be seen on Drowners video for 'A Button On Your Blouse'. The majority of the comments are positive which allows other viewers to see this and watch more of their videos. It also allows Drowners the band to see some of the comments and alter their work to what they think the fans want to see. This shows that the site is interactive. In addition to this one of the comments shown is in another language which shows that videos can reach people from all around the world. The link to the bands Facebook page is also shown which again shows convergence and allows people to go and find out more about the band. 

In addition to YouTube I would also use social media such as Facebook and Twitter to promote my video as these are both very popular sites with accessories to compliment the promotion of the video. Facebook has around 1.3 billion active users and Twitter has 284 million active users meaning they are clearly popular and have the ability to promote my video easily and at low cost. The video would be able to reach a mass audience of people from around the world, even exposing people not necessarily into this particular music genre to my video. The most effective way of promoting my product with these sites would probably be to create pages for the artist and then post the video (or a link to the video on YouTube). I could also post my ancillary texts, behind the scenes pictures and 'teaser' clips on these pages.

On Facebook the ability to like, comment and share (similarly to YouTube) allows people to express their opinions on the video so others can decide whether they want to watch the video and also allowing the producer (in this case me) to take on board advice in order to improve the product. Similarly on Twitter you have the ability to retweet, favourite or reply to tweets which again means you can get feedback (possibly on a wider scale on Twitter) and a wider audience can again be addressed. The retweet button is particularly influential as it allows you to share a tweet (which could contain the link to the video on it) with everyone who follows you and then they are also able to retweet it. This allows lots of people to see the video in a matter of seconds. 


The retweet ability on Twitter is a quick and easy way of promotion which can be seen on Drowners twitter page. The band have retweeted a tweet by 'FRENCHKISS RECORDS' which has the link to their video 'A Button On Your Blouse'. This means that everyone following the band (who are obviously already fans) can view the video, if these viewers like what they see they then may also retweet the tweet and all of their followers can view the video and so on. This means that by using the site promotion isn't limited to a niche audience and it can actually go global. 


If I wanted to include even more social media I could also make an Instagram account which is based around visual imagery. Here I could post photos, for example my ancillary texts and behind the scenes pictures. You are also able to post small, time limited videos so I could possibly again post parts of my video as teasers with a link to the full video in the description.
